How to order your choices in KNRUHS counselling: a practical strategy

Choice filling looks like a formality until you understand what the software does with it. For your rank, category and quota, the system walks down your list from the top and allots you the first college where you clear the cutoff. That single rule shapes every good strategy.
The rule that matters
Because allotment stops at your first qualifying choice, the order of your list is the order of your preferences, and nothing else. Put the college you want most at the top. If your rank clears three colleges on your list, you get the highest one, not a random one and not the "safest" one. There is no advantage to gaming the order: honesty about your preferences is the optimal play.
Build a ladder: reach, moderate, safe
A strong list has three zones. Reach colleges at the top are ones where your rank is near or just outside last year's cutoff: unlikely, but cutoffs do move, and a reach that hits is the best outcome available to you. Moderate colleges in the middle are where your rank sits comfortably inside recent cutoffs. Safe colleges at the bottom are ones your rank clears with room to spare. The safe zone is not pessimism; it is insurance. A list with no safe options is a bet that nothing goes wrong, and counselling is where things go wrong.
How many choices is enough?
More than you think. Each extra choice costs nothing and can only help, because the system never allots you a lower choice when a higher one was available. The candidates who regret their lists are almost always the ones who filled eight choices when they could have filled thirty. The one hard rule: never include a college you would not actually join. An allotment you refuse is a wasted round.
Mistakes that cost seats
- Ordering by "chance" instead of preference. Putting a safe college above a moderate one you prefer more. If your rank clears both, you get the safe one and never see the other.
- Skipping the middle. Lists that jump from dream colleges straight to last-resort options miss the moderate seats where most candidates actually land.
- Copying someone else's list. Your rank, category, gender quota and round are yours alone. A list built for a different profile is decoration.
- Forgetting later rounds. Fill every round's choices fresh. Seats, cutoffs and your own situation all change between rounds.
