How your category rank is estimated (and why the merit list doesn't print it)

The KNRUHS merit list gives every candidate one number: the state merit rank, a serial position counting everyone on the list. But for reserved-category seats, the number that actually decides your fate is your category rank, your position among candidates of your own category. The list never prints it. Fortunately, it can be reconstructed.

Counting down the list

The method is simple in principle. Take the merit list in order, keep only the candidates who declared your category, and count your position among them. If your state merit rank is 4,000 and 900 BC-B candidates sit ahead of you, your BC-B category rank is about 901. Every candidate above you who declared a different category is irrelevant to this particular race.

Why the pools matter so much

Category pools differ enormously in size. In the 2025-26 merit list, the OC pool held 3,288 candidates while the SC-1 pool held just 42. A category rank of 40 is mid-pack in one pool and nearly last in the other. This is also why category ranks are less stable than college reputations from year to year: when a pool is small, a modest change in who registers moves everyone's category rank around.

Where the estimate can wobble

Counting is not perfectly clean. Merit lists contain quirks: the occasional grace-marks row, tied scores, candidates who register but never fill choices. Each introduces a small error, usually a rank or two, occasionally more in tiny pools. An estimated category rank is therefore best read as a narrow range rather than an exact number, and any tool that presents it should be honest about that.

How the predictor does it

Rather than asking you to count sixteen thousand rows by hand, our rank predictor carries the full per-category merit order inside the page itself and converts your state merit rank to an estimated category rank instantly, in your browser. Your rank never leaves your device. The estimate then drives the reserved-seat comparisons, while your raw state merit rank drives the open-seat comparisons, exactly the way the counselling logic works.
